Wine knowledge has always carried a certain mystique. To outsiders, the world of wine can seem like a maze of grape varieties, appellations, vintages, climates, production methods and tasting language that only a select few somehow learn to navigate. A seasoned enthusiast might be able to explain why two wines made from the same grape taste completely different, identify the influence of climate on acidity, or connect a region’s soil and production traditions to the character of what is in the glass. To someone new to the subject, this can look like the result of years of experience, privilege, or simply drinking a great deal of wine. New research, however, suggests that another factor may play a meaningful role in how deeply people come to understand complex subjects like wine: general intelligence.

The study, conducted by psychologist Maximilian Krolo of Saarland University together with Professor Timothy C. Bates of the University of Edinburgh, set out to explore a deceptively simple question. Researchers already know from decades of psychological research that intelligence is linked to performance at school and work, but those settings are complicated by powerful external incentives. Students study because they are expected to pass exams and earn qualifications, while employees learn because their jobs often require it and because better performance can bring financial rewards, promotions or professional status. Socioeconomic background also influences access to education, resources and opportunities. The researchers therefore wanted to know whether intelligence still predicts deep learning in a field where people usually participate voluntarily and where there is little obvious external reward for becoming knowledgeable.
Wine offered an unusually useful setting in which to test that idea. For most people, knowing the difference between a cool-climate and warm-climate wine has no direct effect on their career. Memorising grape-growing regions is not part of a standard school curriculum, and understanding how fermentation, ageing or vineyard conditions influence flavour rarely leads to a higher salary unless someone works specifically in the wine trade. Yet wine is culturally prominent, intellectually rich and capable of inspiring lifelong interest. It is also complex enough to require much more than memorising a few facts. Developing real expertise means understanding how different pieces of information connect, and that is precisely the kind of learning in which cognitive differences may become visible.
The researchers recruited 525 participants and asked them to complete two separate assessments. The first measured general cognitive ability using the International Cognitive Ability Resource, or ICAR, a widely used assessment that includes verbal reasoning, matrix reasoning and number-and-letter sequence tasks. These types of questions are designed to examine how well people recognise patterns, solve problems and reason with unfamiliar information. In a later session, the same participants completed a demanding 68-question wine-knowledge test based on the syllabus of the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, an internationally recognised organisation that provides qualifications for wine professionals and serious enthusiasts. The study also collected information about participants’ professional involvement with wine and their preferred types of drinks so the researchers could account for simple exposure and occupational experience.
The results showed a clear relationship between intelligence and wine knowledge. Participants who scored higher on the cognitive assessment also tended to perform better on the specialist wine test. Differences in intelligence statistically explained a little more than nine percent of the variation in participants’ wine-knowledge scores. That figure does not mean intelligence determines whether someone becomes a wine expert, nor does it suggest that most expertise can be reduced to cognitive ability. In fact, the majority of the differences between participants were explained by other factors. What makes the result notable is that the relationship appeared in a domain where people generally learn because they want to, rather than because a teacher, employer or examination system is requiring them to do so.
This distinction matters because deep knowledge is not simply a matter of collecting isolated facts. Someone can memorise that certain grape varieties are associated with particular regions or that grapes grown in cooler climates often retain greater acidity, but expertise requires the ability to connect those ideas and apply them in new situations. A knowledgeable wine enthusiast might use information about climate, grape variety, vineyard location and winemaking technique to anticipate the style of a wine they have never tasted before. That process involves recognising patterns, building relationships between concepts and applying general principles to specific examples. The researchers argue that people with stronger cognitive abilities may be more efficient at constructing these mental networks, which allows them to turn individual pieces of information into a more coherent understanding of the subject.
The findings also help explain why two people can spend years around the same hobby and emerge with very different levels of expertise. One person might drink wine regularly for decades but never develop much interest in why one bottle differs from another. Another person might begin comparing regions, reading about grape varieties, learning production methods and testing their expectations against what they taste. The difference is not simply how often someone encounters wine, but how actively they organise and interpret those encounters. Repeated exposure can create familiarity, but familiarity by itself does not necessarily create structured knowledge.
This point became particularly clear when the researchers looked at professional wine experience. People who worked with wine appeared to benefit even more from higher cognitive ability. Professional environments tend to provide the very things that casual experience often lacks: repeated exposure, clear categories, feedback and opportunities to compare similar examples under structured conditions. A sommelier, retailer or winery employee may encounter the same grape varieties and regions repeatedly, receive corrections when they misunderstand something, and gradually learn how broad principles apply across many different wines. According to the researchers, this kind of organised experience seems to create an environment in which cognitive ability becomes especially useful.
By contrast, simply preferring wine did not have the same effect. People who liked wine generally knew more about it, which is hardly surprising, but enjoyment alone did not strengthen the relationship between intelligence and expertise. This challenges the romantic idea that connoisseurship naturally emerges from tasting enough bottles. Someone can accumulate hundreds of wine experiences without systematically learning from them. They may know which bottles they enjoy and which they dislike, but that is different from understanding why those wines taste the way they do or being able to apply that understanding elsewhere.
The distinction between experience and structured experience has implications far beyond wine. The same pattern can be seen in photography, cooking, investing, music, gardening, chess, foreign languages or almost any other field in which people build knowledge over time. A person can take thousands of photographs without understanding how light, aperture or composition interact. Someone can cook every evening for years without learning much about technique if they simply repeat familiar recipes. Another person may progress much faster because they compare results, seek feedback, deliberately practise difficult skills and connect each new experience to an expanding framework of knowledge. Experience becomes most powerful when it is organised in a way that allows people to notice patterns and correct errors.
This is why the study should not be interpreted as a simple claim that smarter people know more about wine. Intelligence is only one factor among many, and a highly intelligent person with no interest in wine will know far less about it than an enthusiast who has spent years studying the subject. Motivation, curiosity, time, memory, education, opportunity and professional exposure all influence how much expertise someone develops. The study identifies an advantage in the learning process, not a predetermined hierarchy of who can and cannot become knowledgeable.
In fact, one of the more encouraging implications of the research is that expertise appears to depend heavily on the environment in which learning happens. Higher cognitive ability may make it easier to recognise patterns and connect ideas, but structured teaching, repetition and useful feedback can help almost anyone build deeper understanding. A wine tasting, for example, may be entertaining if participants simply sample bottle after bottle. It becomes far more educational if they are asked to compare the wines deliberately, consider differences in climate or production, make predictions and then receive explanations about why those predictions were accurate or inaccurate.
The same principle is highly relevant to education and workplace training. People often sit through lectures, presentations or online courses that expose them to large amounts of information but provide very little opportunity to apply it. Exposure may produce temporary familiarity without creating lasting expertise. Training becomes more effective when learners are required to retrieve information, organise it, compare examples, solve problems and receive feedback. The research on wine therefore offers a useful reminder that the design of learning matters just as much as the amount of information being presented.
The study also pushes back against the stereotype that wine knowledge is inherently elitist. Wine culture is often associated with wealth, social background and access to expensive experiences, and those factors certainly can influence who gets exposed to particular wines or educational opportunities. But the researchers argue that wine knowledge itself behaves like other structured bodies of expertise. It is not a mysterious social code that someone either possesses or does not. It is knowledge that can be taught, practised and organised.
Understanding the difference between grape varieties, regions and production styles does not require being born into a particular social circle. Neither does learning how temperature affects acidity, how oak ageing influences flavour, or why two vineyards only a few kilometres apart can produce noticeably different wines. These are relationships that can be explained and learned. The more clearly those relationships are taught, the less wine needs to feel like an intimidating collection of insider terminology.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the research is that wine itself is almost secondary to the larger question it raises about human curiosity. People routinely become deeply knowledgeable about subjects that provide them with no obvious economic benefit. Someone may know everything about Formula 1 engines, another person may be able to identify dozens of bird species by sound, and someone else may spend years learning about vintage watches, medieval history, specialty coffee or tropical plants. These interests demonstrate that much of human learning happens simply because people find certain subjects fascinating.
The new findings suggest that intelligence may influence how efficiently people turn that curiosity into organised expertise, but they also reveal that curiosity alone is not enough. Deep knowledge grows when people repeatedly engage with a subject, connect new information to what they already know, test their assumptions and receive feedback that helps them correct mistakes. Over time, those small acts of structured learning accumulate into expertise.
That may be the most useful lesson to take from the research. Becoming knowledgeable is not simply about spending more time around a subject. It is about paying attention to the right things while you are there. The difference between someone who has tasted hundreds of wines and someone who genuinely understands wine may not be the number of glasses in their past, but the quality of the thinking that happened around them.
Intelligence may make some of those connections easier and faster, but the broader message is surprisingly practical. Whether the subject is wine, music, photography, investing or almost anything else, experience becomes far more valuable when it is organised, questioned and reinforced with feedback. Simply doing something repeatedly can make it familiar. Learning why it works is what turns familiarity into expertise.
