Ukraine War Spills Into Romania as Drone Crashes in Galati

A Russian drone launched during a large overnight attack on Ukraine crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people and triggering renewed concern that Moscow’s war is spilling further across NATO’s borders. Romanian authorities said the drone was detected by radar after entering national airspace before crashing onto the roof of a residential building in Galati, a city on the Danube River near the borders with Ukraine and Moldova. The impact sparked a fire, forcing residents to evacuate as police, firefighters, and emergency services responded to the scene.

Two people suffered minor injuries, officials said. The incident prompted Romania, a NATO member, to request a faster transfer of anti-drone defense capabilities from the alliance. Romania’s Foreign Ministry described the drone’s flight into Romanian airspace as a serious breach of international law.

Romania’s Defense Ministry said the military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter, which were authorized to engage potential targets. Emergency alerts were also sent to residents in affected areas. The crash came during one of Russia’s latest large-scale aerial assaults on Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia launched 232 drones and one ballistic missile overnight. Ukrainian forces said they shot down 217 drones, while strikes were recorded in 14 areas.

Russia has increasingly relied on drone and missile barrages to damage Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and pressure civilian areas. Kyiv has repeatedly warned that it needs stronger air defenses to withstand the continued attacks.

The Romanian crash drew sharp condemnation from European leaders. Finnish President Alexander Stubb said Russia had crossed “another line” in its war against Ukraine and indicated that the matter was being discussed within NATO. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also condemned the incident, saying the drone had struck a densely populated area on EU territory. She said the European Union would continue strengthening security along its eastern border and was preparing another package of sanctions against Russia.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said the incident reflected the growing danger posed by Russia’s continued drone and missile attacks, warning that Moscow’s battlefield setbacks were making such incidents more likely. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has continued pressing the United States for more Patriot air defense missiles, saying Ukraine’s current deliveries are not enough to counter Russia’s escalating attacks.

At the United Nations, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the intensification of attacks risks spiraling into “unknown and unintended consequences.” He called for immediate de-escalation, renewed diplomacy, and a full ceasefire.

For Romania, the crash in Galati is more than a border incident. It is a reminder that Russia’s war against Ukraine is no longer confined to Ukrainian territory alone. As drones and missiles continue to fly near NATO’s eastern flank, the pressure on the alliance to strengthen air defenses is likely to grow.
